(AP) ? Islamist Mohammed Morsi was declared the winner Sunday in Egypt's first free presidential election in history, closing the tumultuous first phase of a democratic transition and opening a new struggle with the still-dominant military rulers who recently stripped the presidency of most of its powers.

In Tahrir Square, the birthplace of the uprising that ousted autocratic President Hosni Mubarak, joyous supporters of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood wept and kneeled on the ground in prayer when they heard the announcement on live television. They danced, set off fireworks and released doves in the air with Morsi's picture attached in celebrations not seen in the square since Mubarak was forced out on Feb. 11, 2011.

Many are looking now to see whether Morsi will try to take on the military and wrestle back the powers they took from his office just one week ago. Thousands vowed to remain in Tahrir to demand that the ruling generals reverse their decision.

In his first televised speech, the 60-year old U.S.-trained engineer called on Egyptians to unite and tried to reassure minority Christians, who mostly backed Morsi's rival Ahmed Shafiq because they feared Islamic rule.

He said he carries "a message of peace" to the world and pledged to preserve Egypt's international accords, a reference to the peace deal with Israel.

He also paid tribute to nearly 900 protesters killed in last year's uprising.

"I wouldn't have been here between your hands as the first elected president without ... the blood, the tears, and sacrifices of the martyrs," he said.

In the lengthy and redundant speech, Morsi appeared to be struggling to compose his sentences. Wearing a blue suit and tie, he looked stiff and uncomfortable and did not smile throughout as he read from a paper. He was non-confrontational and did not mention the last-minute power grab by the ruling military, instead praising the armed forces.

The White House congratulated Morsi and urged him to advance national unity as he forms a new government. White House press secretary Jay Carney said Morsi's victory is a milestone in Egypt's transition to democracy after decades of authoritarian rule under Mubarak. The Obama administration had expressed no public preference in the presidential race.

Left on the sidelines of the political drama are the liberal and secular youth groups that drove the uprising against Mubarak, left to wonder whether Egypt has taken a step towards becoming an Islamist state. Some grudgingly supported Morsi in the face of Shafiq, who was Mubarak's last prime minister, while others boycotted the vote.

Morsi will now have to reassure them that he represents the whole country, not just Islamists, and will face enormous challenges after security and the economy badly deteriorated in the transition period.

Pro-democracy leader Mohammed ElBaradei urged unity after the results were announced.

"It is time we work all as Egyptians as part of a national consensus to build Egypt that is based on freedom and social justice," he wrote on his Twitter account.

The elections left the nation deeply polarized with one side backing Shafiq, who promised to provide stability and prevent Egypt from becoming a theocracy. Because of his military career, many saw him as the military's preferred candidate.

In the other camp are those eager for democratic change and backers of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood who were persecuted, jailed and banned under Mubarak but now find themselves one of the two most powerful groups in Egypt.

The other power center is the ruling military council that took power after the uprising and is headed by Mubarak's defense minister of 20 years.

Just one week ago, at the moment polls were closing in the presidential runoff, the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) issued constitutional amendments that stripped the president's office of most of its major powers. The ruling generals made themselves the final arbiters over the most pressing issues still complicating the transition? such as writing the constitution, legislating, passing the state budget? and granted military police broad powers to detain civilians.

"I am happy the Brotherhood won because now the revolution will continue on the street against both of them, the Brotherhood and the SCAF," said Lobna Darwish, an activist who has boycotted the elections.

Also, a few days before that constitutional declaration, a court dissolved the freely elected parliament, which is dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood, leaving the military now in charge of legislating.

Brotherhood members and experts said the results were used a bargaining chip between the generals and the Brotherhood over the parameters of what appears to be a new power-sharing agreement. The country's new constitution is not written and the authorities of the president are not clear.

This is the first time modern Egypt will be headed by an Islamist and by a freely elected civilian. The country's last four presidents over the past six decades have all came from the ranks of the military.

"Congratulations because this means the end of the Mubarak state," said Shady el-Ghazali Harb, a prominent activist who was among the leaders of the protests in January and February last year.

The results of the elections were delayed for four days amid accusations of manipulation and foul play by both sides, raising political tensions in Egypt to a fever pitch.

The delay plunged the country into nerve-wrecking anticipation and pushed tensions to a fever pitch. Parallel mass rallies by Shafiq and Morsi supporters were held in different parts of Cairo and cut-throat media attacks by supporters of both swarmed TV shows. In the hours before the announcement of the winner, the fear of new violence was palpable.

Heavy security was deployed around the country, especially outside state institutions, in anticipation of possible violence. Workers were sent home early from jobs, jewelry stores closed for fear of looting and many were stocking up on food and forming long lines at cash machines in case new troubles began.

Morsi narrowly defeated Shafiq with 51.7 percent of the vote versus 48.3, by a margin of only 800,000 votes, the election commission said. Turnout was 51 percent.

Farouk Sultan, the head of the commission, described the elections as "an important phase in the end of building our nascent democratic experience."

Sultan went to pains to explain the more than 400 complaints presented by the two candidates challenging counting procedures and alleging attempts of rigging. It appeared to be an attempt to discredit claims that the election commission was biased in favor of Shafiq, the candidate perceived as backed by the military rulers.

The country is deeply divided between supporters of the Brotherhood, liberals and leftists who also decided to back them as a way to stand up to the military, and other secular forces that fear the domination of the Brotherhood, and grew critical of it in the past year. The small margin of victory for Morsi also sets him for a strong opposition from supporters of Shafiq, viewed as a representative of the old regime.

Naguib Sawiris, a Coptic Christian business tycoon who joined a liberal bloc in voicing opposition to the Muslim Brotherhood a day before the results were announced, said he expects the new president to send a reassuring message to Egypt's Christian minority who represent around 10 percent of the population of 85 million.

"There are fears of imposing an Islamic state ... where Christians don't have same rights," Sawiris told the private TV station CBC. Morsi "is required to prove the opposite. ... We don't want speeches or promises but in the coming period, it is about taking action. ... He was not our choice but we are accepting it is a democratic choice."

Hamdeen Sabahi, a leftist presidential candidate who came in a surprising third place in the first round of elections, asked Morsi to live up to his pledges to form a national coalition government and appoint presidential aides from different groups "that express the largest national consensus."

Khaled Abdel-Hamid, a leading leftist politician, said Morsi must fight to get his powers back or he will lose any popular support he may have garnered.

"If he fights to get his power back, we will support him. But if he doesn't fight back, then he is settling for siding with the military," he said.

Asus Transformer Pad Infinity TF700

The New Apple iPad ($499, 4.5 stars) started the resolution race, and it looks like Asus is the first to market with an Android contender?the Asus Transformer Pad Infinity TF700 ($499/32GB, $599/64GB). We first heard about this tablet?back at Mobile World Congress, and though it doesn't quite match the iPad pixel-for-pixel, its 1,920-by-1,200-pixel resolution is still pretty impressive. Aside from the screen, the TF700 looks and feels a lot like the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime TF201 ($499, 4 stars), but inside are slightly more powerful components, from a faster-clocked processor to an improved camera. While this is certainly a major step forward for Android tablets, there just aren't enough apps that take full advantage of the high-resolution screen.

Design, Features, and Camera
Much like Apple's own high-resolution tablet, the TF700 is nearly indistinguishable from its predecessor. The TF700 measures 10.35 by 7.11 by 0.33 inches (HWD) and 1.31 pounds, making it nearly identical to the TF201 (10.35 by 7.11 by 0.32 inches, 1.28 pounds). It's thinner and lighter than the new iPad (7.3 by 9.5 by 0.37 inches, 1.46 pounds). The aluminum frame feels solidly built, with the same concentric textured rings shared between all Asus tablets. There's a slight taper along the left and right edges, which gives the tablet a wedge-like appearance. On the backside, instead of a single piece of aluminum, a thin strip at the top is made from plastic?likely a revision to address any GPS signal issues. The TF700 will be available in two colors: Amethyst Gray and Champagne Gold. The ports and buttons have been moved around; the Power and Volume buttons are now both on the top edge, with the headphone jack, micro HDMI, and microSD card slot found on the left. The bottom edge houses the proprietary connector for charging, syncing, and docking with the optional keyboard dock ($149). The TF700 is compatible with the keyboard dock for the TF201, but not the dock for the Asus Transformer Pad TF300?($379, 4 stars). ?

This is a Wi-Fi only tablet that connects to 802.11b/g/n networks (only at 2.4GHz), and it also features Bluetooth 3.0 and GPS. Bluetooth headsets connected fine and GPS was fast and accurate. The $499 base model comes with 32GB of internal storage, which is double that of the $499 new iPad, and you can upgrade to 64GB for $599. The 64GB iPad will run you $699. We tested the 64GB model and found that it only accepted microSD cards up to 16GB.

The camera has been upgraded from the TF201, and now features an f/2.2 aperture as opposed to the f/2.4. It's the same 8-megapixel camera found in the TF300, but with an LED flash. There's also a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. Images taken with the rear camera looked good, with crisp details, accurate colors, and proper focus. Indoors, however, details were still a bit too soft for my taste. The low-light performance was acceptable, with little image noise, but some dark spots looked too dark and lost details in the shadows. Images taken with the front-facing camera were very grainy and the quality was unsuitable for anything but video chats, where quality is less of a factor. Video using the rear camera is captured at 1080p resolution and held steady at 30 frames per second both indoors and outdoors, which is an improvement over previous models that dropped frame rates indoors. The quality itself is largely the same though, and the footage is still too wobbly.

Software, Display, and Performance
The Infinity TF700 features the same Android 4.0.3 "Ice Cream Sandwich" build as the TF201 and TF300. There are some minor cosmetic changes, but the main thing you'll notice is Asus's customized quick setting panel in the notification bar, which give you access to common settings like Wi-Fi, performance modes, and screen brightness. For a more in depth look head over to the TF201 review or our hands-on with the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime with Ice Cream Sandwich. There's also the usual pre-loaded software, ranging from Netflix and Kindle apps to Asus's own cloud storage and e-book reader apps.

The marquee feature here is the 10.1-inch 1,920-by-1,200-pixel IPS+ display, and it doesn't disappoint. It's not quite as densely packed as the 2,048-by-1,536-pixel Retina display, but the 224 pixels per inch is fairly close to the iPad's 264 pixels per inch. You likely won't notice the difference at normal viewing distances. The display itself is covered by Corning's new Gorilla Glass 2, which is thinner than the original and supposedly offers better touch responsiveness, but I didn't notice any difference. Much like the Transformer Prime TF201, the Infinity TF700 has a Super IPS+ mode that jacks the brightness up to 600 nits. Apple doesn't list an exact brightness for its displays, but the TF700 is much brighter than the iPad?so much so that I found myself checking to make sure the iPad was in fact set at max brightness. Viewing angle is solid and colors look pleasantly saturated in both normal and Super IPS+ modes.

The new screen enhances text so Web browsing and emails look great, but few apps have been optimized for the high-res display. The problem lies not with the TF700, but rather with the Android apps themselves. Text elements and pictures with high enough resolution look incredibly sharp and detailed, but many games don't take advantage of the new screen. Riptide GP and Shadowgun, two games optimized for the Tegra 3 processor, look the same on the TF700 and the low-cost TF300. That's not necessarily a bad thing, and most apps scale very well to the higher resolution. In some cases, apps do look better. For example, the birds in Angry Birds Space look clear and detailed when fully zoomed out, making the same rendered birds on the TF300 look like pixelated blobs.

The question is, will developers begin to optimize apps for the high resolution displays? They have yet to optimize many games for even standard resolution Android tablets, so I remain skeptical. The Google Play app market pales in comparison with the over 200,000 tablet-oriented apps in the Apple App Store. Most Android apps are made to run on smaller phone screens, and generally look bad on 10-inch tablets, with far too much wasted space. There are options like the Tablified Market ($1.49, 4 stars), which offers around 1,500 apps, and Nvidia's Tegra Zone, which features a few dozen apps specifically made to take advantage of Tegra processors.

Wisconsin politics creep into Washington | Bob Roegner

By BOB ROEGNER
Federal Way Mirror Inside Politics
June 21, 2012 ? Updated 5:33 PM?

The attempted recall of Wisconsin Republican Gov. Scott Walker turned neighbor against neighbor, split many households and became one of the most brutal political battles in the country.

The controversy stemmed from Walker?s goal of eliminating collective bargaining for public employees unions due to budget shortfalls.

At its heart, the real issue in Wisconsin wasn?t the budget. It was about raw political power and who will have it.

Could it happen in Washington state? And what does it say about the polarization of our country and the future?

Walker won the test of political strength with a comfortable margin for several reasons. There is a growing concern among many voters that public employees are too well paid and their retirement systems too expensive. Evidence similar votes in San Diego and San Jose, Calif., to curtail public pension systems.

The representations of benefits received by public employees may not be wholly accurate depending on which unions, teachers, police, fire, social workers, clerks or others are calculated ? but the perception is there, and it is growing.

Walker also benefited by raising significantly more money than the unions ? $45 million vs. $17 million ? for the campaign. But the main reason he won was a smart political move he made at the beginning. Walker claimed the state needed to eliminate collective bargaining due to a budget shortage. He did not include police or fire in the legislation. This removed the two most politically influential unions from the fight. Since they also tend to have among the most beneficial pensions, it also suggests that Governor Walker?s budget concerns may have been secondary to weakening the other unions that, not surprisingly, tend to favor Democrats.

The telling point was Walker?s effort to eliminate the unions? ability to collect dues from the members. Part of the unions? dues can be used to donate to candidates for office, usually Democrats. He was trying to cut off the funding source for the opposition.

Had Walker included uniformed personnel in his proposal to the Wisconsin Legislature, it likely wouldn?t have passed. Even if it had, it is likely the public vote would have been significantly different if police and fire had joined the recall effort, and Walker was smart enough to know that.

Politically speaking, Wisconsin, San Diego and San Jose have served as a testing grounds for political techniques aimed at tilting the level of the playing field nationally between labor and management. Weakening public sector unions will eventually weaken private sector unions, and unions have historically been a key Democratic constituency representing the working class.

Management is typically more well paid and, along with wealthy conservative donors, tend to support Republicans.

The disappearing middle class has been more Democratic, but out of concern for their own diminishing paycheck, appears receptive to the anti-public employee message. So do some private sector unions for similar reasons.

Whichever side of the argument you are on, objectively watch the spin and techniques used to persuade you. When Democrats wanted to tax the richest one percent in the country at a higher level, Republicans accused the Democrats of ?class warfare.?

When the Republicans attacked benefits for public sector unions that generally represent working people, ?class warfare? got lost in the debate over how your tax dollar is spent.

So far, Republicans are winning the message battle.

The successes of money and message in Wisconsin has emboldened political leaders elsewhere.

Could it happen here? Yes, although both candidates for governor, Jay Inslee and Rob McKenna, have downplayed any comparisons to Wisconsin in their campaigns. Labor is still pretty strong in Washington and we are still a blue state. Both Inslee and McKenna have been endorsed by some public employee unions, although the alignment with Inslee seems closer. And the latest forecast shows the state revenue on track.

Nevertheless, the Wisconsin debate has already started here. Public unions have gone through pay cuts, layoffs and during the last session, a battle over pension issues.

Whether it is Inslee or McKenna who wins the governor?s seat, they will be a ?rookie.? And initially, the real power may come from whichever party controls the state Legislature. Democrats believe that after three years of significant cuts, it may be time to resist a further decline in state services. Republicans will want to continue the cuts to undermine public unions and could find McKenna more receptive.

The real battle may be in the future. The Republicans? long-term strategy is to take public unions out of the political battle by reducing their numbers and the dues they pay that typically support Democratic candidates.

To see what may happen here, watch how the battles in Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire and New Mexico play out. If Republican governors in those states are able to weaken collective bargaining for public unions, Washington will move up on their list of targets.

Due to a difference in governmental structure, a recall isn?t likely here. The budget debate will set the framework, but the underlying issue will be political power.

Brutal as it may be, Wisconsin could not only happen here, it may be just around the corner.

Karib Cable and Flow: can these two companies change the ...

Within weeks of each other, Karib Cable and Columbus International announced their imminent entry into the Barbados telecom market. Both are planning to offer triple play, but considering their track records in other countries, what might be in store for Barbados?

Table 2: 2012 NRIs for the top 10 ranked countries and select Caribbean countries (Source: WEF/INSEAD)

For those of you who are regular readers of ICT Pulse, particularly our Snapshot series, you might have noticed an anomaly for one of the countries: Barbados. Barbados, with a population of approximately 287,000 and an estimated per capita GDP, of USD?15,000, tends to be highly ranked in a number of ICT-related international assessments. For example, in the Global Information Technology Report (GITR) 2012, produced by the World Economic Forum (WEF) and INSEAD, which measures network readiness, Barbados was ranked 35th out of 147 countries . Moreover, it was the third highest ranked countries in the Americas, behind the United States and Canada.

However, key deficiencies the assessment highlighted?in Barbados were the high prices for broadband services, along with the limited competition in telephony and Internet services. In addition to affecting its global ranking, these limitations have been affecting the country?s competitiveness, although it has been able to create a favourable business/investment environment.

When that GITR was completed, there were three Internet ISPs in Barbados: LIME, Sunbeach Communications?and Telebarbados. However, as our most recent Snapshot of Internet speed and spend and broadband affordability indicated, granted that the focus was on LIME and Sunbeach Communications,

  • the monthly subscription for 2 Mbps Internet service plan was one of the highest in the region ? behind the British Virgin islands, Turks and Caicos islands, Cayman Islands, and Antigua and Barbuda
  • a 2 Mbps plan would not be particularly affordable to the average Barbadian consumer, as it equates to around 6% of a person?s monthly income
  • High Speed Broadband (plans offering transmission speeds of over 12 Mbps) is not available to residential customers in Barbados.

New players to the market

However, recent announcements are likely to have a significant impact on Barbados? Internet landscape. First Karib Cable, which originated in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and also operates in Saint Lucia and Antigua and Barbuda, plans to launch service in Barbados within the next 3?4 months. The company currently offers triple play (voice, Internet and subscriber TV services) in Saint Vincent and Saint Lucia, and is considered a welcomed addition to the Barbados telecoms market:

?Karib?s leading edge fiber optic technology will provide a best-in-class infrastructure for all Barbadians. Moreover, the new network will enhance Barbados? reputation as being one of world?s pre-eminent international business centers. By improving our telecommunications network, Barbados will improve its ability to attract, win and sustain investment for Barbados,? said Wayne Kirton, CEO of Invest Barbados. ?(Source: Yahoo Finance)

Second, and perhaps more importantly, Columbus International Inc., which offers services in the region under the brand, ?Flow?, has entered into an agreement with Caribbean Fibre Holdings. The result will be the transfer of ownership of TeleBarbados Inc., Tele-St. Lucia Inc. and Wamco Technology Group Limited. The transfer of ownership and existing telecoms licences to this new owner will most likely be subject to regulatory approval in both Barbados and Saint Lucia. However, this deal has the potential to substantially improve the speed and availability of Internet service in Barbados in particular, along with its regional and international competitiveness.

Potential impact

With Karib Cable?s entry, Barbados will have four?ISPs. However, based on the pricing structure and transmission speeds the company currently offers in the countries it already serves ? up to 4.4 Mbps for between USD?90 and USD?215 ? its likely offerings in Barbados in the first instance, might not be a major improvement from what currently obtains.

On the other hand, Flow currently offers up to 100?Mbps to residential customers in Curacao, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago, for between USD?142 and USD?223. Further, noting that TeleBarbados already has some fibre networks deployed, Flow could realise a relatively early launch in Barbados. Hence, it could potentially offer competitively priced high speed broadband in Barbados, similar to other countries in which is operates, thanks to lower network costs, which could potentially result in a more favourable return on investment

More importantly, although Flow, and the other companies and brands under the Columbus group of companies might not be widely known within the Caribbean, Columbus Communications is a major stakeholder in the submarine cable networks in the region. As shown in Figure 1, it is either the full owner (as Columbus Networks) or an investor in others. This means that it has ready access to considerable international bandwidth to connect Caribbean countries to the internet and other major exchanges.

Figure 1: Columbus Communications? submarine cable footprint (Source: Columbus Communications)

In summary, the imminent entry of Flow/the Columbus group of companies into terrestrial networks and the provision of services in Barbados and Saint Lucia, does highlight the company?s continuing interest and focus in the region. When coupled with its extensive sub-sea infrastructure; ability to offer of high speed broadband at relatively prices; along with its triple play offerings, Columbus International has the potential to be the leading provider of data services in the Caribbean region.

The Nikon D3200 ($699.95 direct with 18-55mm lens) is the company's entry-level D-SLR, and as such offers a wealth of features that should appeal to photographers in search of their first interchangeable lens camera. The 24-megapixel shooter improves upon the 14-megapixel resolution of the D3100 ($699.95, 4 stars) and also provides full manual shooting controls for seasoned shutterbugs. It does well in low light, and offers continuous autofocus during video recording, but doesn't quite oust our current under-$1,000 Editors' Choice D-SLR, the Nikon D5100 ($899.99, 4.5 stars),?with its broader feature set including a sharp, articulating rear LCD.

Design and Features
Even though it dwarfs point-and-shoot cameras, the D3200 ?is quite compact for an SLR. The body measures 3.8 by 5.0 by 3.1 inches and weighs an even pound (sans lens), slightly smaller than the 3.9-by-5.1-by-3.1, 1.1-pound Canon EOS Rebel T3 ($599.99, 3.5 stars). Even though the included 18-55mm (27-82.5mm equivalent) zoom lens is small compared with professional telephoto zoom lenses, it feels larger than it is when mounted on the small camera.

The biggest advantage that an SLR has over a mirrorless compact interchangeable lens camera like the Sony Alpha NEX-F3 ($599.99, 4.5 stars) is its optical viewfinder. While you do have the option of adding an EVF to many mirrorless compacts, it isn't the same as looking through the lens. However, like most other entry-level SLRs, the D3200 skimps a bit on viewfinder quality. It uses a pentamirror design, which uses a series of mirrors to direct the light captured by the lens to your eye. Enthusiast and professional D-SLRs, like the Pentax K-5 ($1,249.95, 3.5 stars) and Nikon D800 ($2,999.95, 4 stars), use a solid glass pentaprism to redirect the light, which results in a larger, brighter image. If you're accustomed to a point-and-shoot, the D3200's viewfinder will be a huge step up, but old-school photographers may be surprised at just how small the finder is compared with classic 35mm SLRs.

If you have a stable of old Nikkor lenses that you would like to put to use on a digital body, you'll be happy to know that pretty much any lens manufactured after 1977 will mount on the D3200. Most, even those that support screw-drive autofocus, will be limited to manual focus mode only?the D3200 doesn't have a focus screw to support these lenses that lack internal focus motors. Couple that with the relatively small viewfinder, and you'll quickly realize that this was not a camera that was designed with manual focus in mind. If you have autofocus Nikon lenses without internal motors, you should consider the D5100 , since it includes the hardware needed to focus them.

If, on the other hand, you're a complete novice, you'll like the D3200's killer feature?its Guide Mode. Switching the Mode Dial to Guide brings up a colorful menu on the rear display that asks you if you'd like to shoot, review photos, or configure the camera. The Shoot menu is broken up into Easy and Advanced situations which feature presets for landscapes, close ups, low light portraits, fast action, and other common photographic subjects. This, along with select number of scene modes that live on the Mode Dial, goes a long way into configuring the camera to best capture the image at hand, without the need for encyclopedic knowledge of photographic technique.

The D3200's shooting controls are scattered about its body. The Movie Record, Info, and EV Compensation buttons are located directly behind the shutter release, and you'll only find a four-way controller, Drive Mode control, Exposure Lock, and Live View button on the rear of the camera. The button to raise the flash and control its output, as well as a Function button, round out the shooting controls?they both live on the front left of the camera, right above the Lens Release button.

Aside from EV Compensation, shutter speed, and aperture, which are visible in the viewfinder, you'll need to use the rear 3-inch LCD to view settings as you adjust them. The 4:3 display is quite bright and sharp thanks to a 921k-dot resolution, but it doesn't tilt away from the camera's body like that of the Canon EOS Rebel T3i ($899.99, 3.5 stars) or the Sony Alpha 65 ($999.99, 4 stars). Hitting the I button, which is located to the left of the LCD, gives you quick access to Image Quality, White Balance, ISO, Drive Mode, Focus Mode, AF Area, Metering, EV Compensation, Flash Compensation, and Flash Mode. If you need to adjust anything else, you'll have to dive into the full menu.

(AP) ? Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah is in the holy city of Mecca as officials prepare for the burial of the country's crown prince.

The official Saudi News Agency says the 88-year-old monarch arrived in Mecca on Saturday after the death of Crown Prince Nayef bin Abdul-Aziz, the second heir to the Saudi throne to die in less than a year.

Nayef's body was expected to arrive Sunday in Jiddah from Geneva, where he was receiving medical treatment. Burial was planned for later Sunday in Mecca.

Royal family members will then convene after a mourning period to select the next crown prince of OPEC's top producer. The expected choice is the 76-year-old defense minister, Prince Salman. But it also opens room for a younger prince to move up the line of succession.

Phony growth, or phony austerity? Pick your poison.

Europe?s austerity policies nor America?s growth policies have worked. In Europe, governments collectively spent 44.8% of GDP in 2000. Today it is 49.2%. That?s not austerity, that?s stimulus, according to Bill Bonner.

Today, we introduce a new twist on these Daily Reckoning remarks? The new approach is that we are going to write less. Yes?we promise! Long term Daily Reckoning sufferers have heard this before. But this time, we really mean it. Honest injun.

And to prove we are serious, we?re keeping today?s comments to just two pages? And only one subject. An old one.

We live in a world of frauds and counterfeits?bunkum and claptrap?

That?s what makes it so much fun! It brings tears to our eyes one day?and seizures of laughter the next. So many imposters?so little time.

As you know, neither Europe?s austerity policies nor America?s growth policies have worked. Why? Because they are both phony.

In Europe, governments collectively spent 44.8% of GDP in 2000. Today it is 49.2%. A big increase. That?s not austerity?that?s stimulus. The Europeans are letting out their belts, not cinching them up.

And now that the phony austerity is not working, a new batch of leaders wants to try something new ? phony growth. Francois Hollande, France?s new president, says he will hire more government workers and spend more money to promote ?growth.? He also says he?ll raise taxes on the rich to 75% of marginal income (up from 41% now) and increase the ?wealth tax.? How he thinks you get real growth out of this foul mixture is a mystery. The government already directs and consumes half the nation?s output?and the economy is flat. How will it do better with more money? Instead, the French will be wasting resources?squeezing the most productive part of the economy?and getting poorer.

Meanwhile, the US has stuck to its phony growth policies. The feds run huge deficits to ?stimulate? the economy.

(Reuters) ? The government posted a budget deficit of $125 billion in May, more than twice the level registered in the same month last year.

The May deficit, which was close to analyst forecasts, followed a rare month of surplus in April that was due to higher budget receipts during tax season but also other temporary factors.

So far this fiscal year, the budget deficit stands at $844.5 billion, narrower than at the same time a year ago.

Under the government?s accounting system, October is the opening month of fiscal 2012. During fiscal 2011 which ended September 30, the budget deficit totaled $1.296 trillion.

We saw yesterday where all that money has gotten us. Nowhere. Family wealth has dropped back to levels of 20 years ago.

But wait?maybe it?s not the feds? fault. While the Europeans pretend to cut back, maybe America?s stimulus program is a fraud too. That?s what a pair of professors at Yale claim. This ?recovery? is different from previous recoveries, they believe, because the US is following a ?hidden austerity program:?

?there is something historically different about this recession and its aftermath: in the past, local government employment has been almost recession-proof. This time it?s not. Going back as long as the data have been collected (1955), with the one exception of the 1981 recession, local government employment continued to grow almost every month regardless of what the economy threw at it. But since the latest recession began, local government employment has fallen by 3 percent, and is still falling. In the equivalent period following the 1990 and 2001 recessions, local government employment grew 7.7 and 5.2 percent. Even following the 1981 recession, by this stage local government employment was up by 1.4 percent.

Without this hidden austerity program, the economy would look very different. If state and local governments had followed the pattern of the previous two recessions, they would have added 1.4 million to 1.9 million jobs and overall unemployment would be 7.0 to 7.3 percent instead of 8.2 percent.

So, dear reader, pick your poison. Phony growth? Or phony austerity? Neither works. What does work? What would turn this economy around?and put it back on the road to real growth? We?ll tell you next week. We?re out of space for today.

Regards,

Bill Bonner,

Are you single and ready to mingle? Has the thought of online dating services crossed your mind but you?re too afraid to venture out in the cyber world because everything?s still new to you? Well here are a few online dating advices that you might help you find your knight in shining armor.First of all, the internet has many different online dating and matchmaking sites. Because of the variety in abundance, there might be some that works for you while others don?t so the first thing you need to do is go through the sites available and find one that you are comfortable with. Next, sign up and get ready to mingle. Do remember that while creating your profile, give it some thought; you would want your profile to reflect the real you and not someone fake. Allow possible candidates to see what you really are like so whatever it is, don?t lie on your profile. Also, the internet is a dangerous place so make sure you don?t give out private information. To find a suitable candidate through online dating, you can search through galleries and go through profiles. Most sites let you look for people with similar interest, use this as a gateway and move on from there. When you find someone you think you can carry out a conversation with, start by sending a few messages. As the flirting continues, don?t get too caught up and be willing to meet up. Get to know the person first through emails, and messages then slowly move up to phone calls and texts. When you feel ready to meet up, make sure it?s in a public place and not at home.If you feel pressured by him to meet somewhere secluded or if he insist on picking you up from home, say no. This is because despite how honest you may be, others could easily be faking their identity so don?t trust people too easily over the internet. Go on, have fun and find your man!Getting dates on internet dating sites might be a comfortable and easy way for folks trying to meet new people to befriend or form significant relationships with. It has become increasingly popular given that about 20 million people use such online dating services today. However, meeting someone this way is different from meeting someone face-to-face. Keep reading our dating advice for women in order to stay safe and protected. The first essential thing is to do some examining about the reputation and safety aspects of the dating website you are thinking about using. It?s completely reasonable to check if it gives you safety tips to protect yourself against folks that have bad intentions. It would also help to inquire from the owners whether background scans are performed against an official database with the names of known sex offenders. It?s best not to supply information of a personal nature the first time you meet somebody online. Simply giving a first name is good to begin with. But keep home address details and telephone numbers private for the time being. This sort of information might well be used to identify your whereabouts.Internet dates should never allow someone to rush into personal meetings. Making face-to-face connections really should only be done when you feel ready, and ideally in well-lit public places. Furthermore, make sure you are acquainted with the location where the meet up is planned to happen. Even better, ask a friend to come along with you.On many occasions following your instinct is the best thing to do. It?s a spontaneous and self-protecting mechanism against all kinds of immediate danger. Jamie Dupree's Washington Insider: Democrats win in Arizona

A week after suffering a big defeat in Wisconsin, Democrats were the ones celebrating on this latest Tuesday night, as their party kept control of a House seat most recently held by ex-Rep. Gabby Giffords, who resigned earlier this year to deal with the aftermath of injuries suffered in a 2011 assassination attempt.

The victory was a welcome change of pace for Democrats, who have suffered through a bad few weeks of late, marked by their defeat in Wisconsin, bad economic reports and unforced errors by President Obama and the White House.

A week ago it was Republicans who were talking about how Wisconsin voters had sent a message that would resonate into the November elections; this week it was Democrats pleased with the results of an election in a swing district that had a Republican advantage in voter registration.

Here was the statement issued early this morning from Rep. Steve Israel (D-NY), the head of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee:

?On behalf of the DCCC, congratulations to Ron Barber on his victory. Ron will bring his independent-minded approach and strong commitment to rebuilding the middle class to Congress and build on Gabby?s legacy.

?Arizona?s 8th Congressional district has more registered Republicans than Democrats, this race has been rated a toss-up throughout the election, and Republican outside groups outspent Democratic outside groups by more than $500,000. Ron Barber?s strong campaign made this a referendum on the Republican plans to drastically cut Medicare and privatize Social Security, while giving massive tax breaks to millionaires, Big Oil and corporations that ship jobs overseas. The Republican plan lost.

?This campaign previewed the message fight that will play out across the country in November: Democrats committed to protecting the middle class, Social Security and Medicare versus misleading Republican attacks on Obamacare and national Democrats. The 84 Republicans representing districts more Democratic than this district are on notice that scoring political points instead of making progress on the economy, and looking out for millionaires, Big Oil, and companies that ship jobs overseas instead of the middle class is a losing position with voters.?

There were no other surprises as seven states held votes for Congress on Tuesday; the worst result by an incumbent was Rep. Bob Goodlatte of Virginia, as the veteran Republican won his primary with 66% of the vote.

Not bad for the "worst" one.
