Chardham Yatra: How To Travel If You Are A Patient?

If you are a patient of some disease and are planning a trip to chardham, then you will need to be doubly cautious. This yatra is already very challenging even for the youths & the disease-free people. The geography is unfriendly, the weather is not salubrious and the dhams are difficult to access. So, if you have some disease, then your difficulty increases multifold times. But life is not about hardships! It is about how you overcome the hardships and come out triumphant. There are many tour agents who offer budget chardham yatra packages and also essential assistance to pilgrims of all kinds. Therefore, you can be assured that you will always get help when you are in need.

Nevertheless, you must not make the journey without taking a look at some of these precautionary measures:

i. Get a full health checkup: Before you begin your yatra, you must get a full health checkup. It is a precautionary move which would tell you your exact physical condition. If the checkup shows that you are not in a good shape, then you must not risk taking the journey. It is advisable that you ask your doctor about it. If he gives you the green signal to make the yatra, only then should you start to pack. In case, he doesnt give you a certificate of clearance, then you must try to get healthier for the next year.

ii. Get your fitness levels up: While going to the chardham yatra, you are also required to get fitter than you are presently. Even if your health is alright, your fitness may not be up to the mark. You can easily check this on your own. Try climbing the staircase of a high-storey building and see if you manage it easily or whether you begin to lose your breath! In case you get wearied and breathless, then you must start some sort of an exercise regimen to improve upon your fitness. During the yatra, you would need to do a lot of climbing. So, if your fitness is not high, then you would begin to get tired and out-of-breath very easily.

iii. Carry all the medicines: Even if you have got a fitness clearance from your doctor, you must not get complacent. The pills or capsules which you consume on a daily basis must be brought in adequate amounts till the entire journey gets completed. Do not come with the mindset that you would buy the medicines from the local place. These areas are not very well-developed and medical shops are few & far! Plus, you may not get the exact medicine you need. So, you must carry your medicine kit without fail.

iv. Get escorted by someone: It goes without saying that patients (whether young or old) must not travel alone. In the high altitudes, due to fluctuating temperatures & air pressure, you may turn dizzy or develop some other problems. It would be necessary that you are escorted by someone or your entire family during the chardham yatra.

The Steps to Publishing your Book ? - Writing Career Coach

By Tiffany Colter

Last week, we talked about the steps to writing your book. You can read that blog here. Once you?ve completed your manuscript, or at least are near the end, you need to start to think about how you?re going to publish this book. This is actually a new step in the writing process because even as recently as ten years ago there was really only one option?traditional press. YES, subsidy presses did exist a decade ago, but their price tag made it virtually impossible for many would-be writers.

With the rise of eBooks, print-on-demand, and easy to record audio, there are a number of options available to people now. That makes this step necessary.

This decision really comes down to the goals for your book. For example, if you teach seminars and workshops or do lots of speaking, you may be writing a book to reinforce what you do in those workshops. In that case, self-publishing with a POD printer may be the best option. That offers you the flexibility of ordering small quantities for a single event while having something more professional than photocopies in a binder.

If you are going to go this option I have one caution?don?t skimp on quality! That means make sure you do a decent job on the cover [or hire someone who can]. Also, hire someone to first do a content edit [for readability and craft] and THEN a proofread [for grammar, punctuation and syntax]. The reason many people criticize self-publishing is that people who write their books and then publish them themselves turn out lower quality. The reality is for a penny per word my company can do a content edit or a proofread. On a 30,000 word book you?re looking at $300 for one or $600 for both! That is truly a small price to pay to have a professional image on your book. Other editors may charge more or less. If you are good at proofreading, still get a content edit. I am a professional content editor and have been for almost seven years, but I have my books read by another professional editor. This isn?t an attempt to get you to hire me, just to get you to hire SOMEONE so you put out good quality work.

Okay, what if you want to do royalty publishing. You need to do the same thing with a couple of exceptions.

Some things to do when you are trying to be traditionally published:

  1. Create a Query letter.
  2. Put together a proposal that includes a 1 page summary [single spaced] or 3 page summary [based on the publisher?s/agent?s guidelines] as well as your marketing plan, current platform/reach, and what makes you the right person to write this book.
  3. Yes, I said agent. I?d strongly urge you to secure a LEGITIMATE agent with strong ties in the industry.
  4. To get an agent you?ll need to meet agents at writers? conferences. While some do accept unsolicited manuscripts, most will want to see if your personalities are compatible.
  5. Make sure your first 30-40 pages are WONDERFUL. If they read your query letter and are interested the next thing they?ll do is ask to see a partial. A partial is generally 30-40 pages.
  6. Write an elevator speech. That is a quick 30 second blurb that talks about your story [if you?re trying to sell your book] or about you [if you?re trying to sell multiple books]. You need to have an elevator speech for each book and about you. Here is mine, ?I?m Tiffany Colter, the Writing Career Coach. I teach individual, authors, businesses and speakers how to use written communication to reach their target demographic.? It gives information but also invites follow-up questions.
  7. Recognize this is a S-L-O-W process and accept it is okay. It takes time to get a book edited, formatted, revised, a marketing plan in place, materials printed and other things. ?Determine if your goals for the book-this will determine how you?ll publish. This will take YEARS. Understand that at the beginning.

EBooks?wow, we could talk a very long time about. EBooks would be the same as self-publishing except I urge you to make sure that you have hired someone who knows how to convert the file to the proper eBooks format [whether Kindle, Nook or another eReader].

The key to all of this is remember, this IS publication. No matter what you do, be sure you have EXCELLENT craft, a topic that has a market, and you know how to reach that market [more on that next week].

I hope you are enjoying this series. Email me your questions at Tiffany@WritingCareerCoach.com and make sure you sign up to get the blogs emailed directly to you by using the sign up box to the right.

Show at London's V&A museum celebrates David Bowie

LONDON (AP) ? When did the modern era begin? With the Renaissance? With Elvis Presley?

For a generation of music-loving Britons, it started on July 6, 1972, when David Bowie performed the song "Starman" on the TV show "Top of the Pops."

Viewers had never seen anything like the androgynous orange-haired figure in a jumpsuit, singing about aliens while draping his arm teasingly around guitarist Mick Ronson and offering a lyrical benediction ? "let all the children boogie."

Lonely teenagers in suburban bedrooms across the land were entranced, and, in many cases, inspired.

The ripples from that moment help explain why a major new multimedia exhibition about Bowie at London's Victoria and Albert Museum is the fastest seller in the institution's history, with 50,000 advance tickets sold ? and why Bowie is topping music charts once again at the age of 66.

The "David Bowie Is" exhibition, which opens Saturday, marks the first time Britain's leading museum of decorative arts and design has devoted a show to a pop star.

"Bowie is no ordinary pop star," co-curator Victoria Broackes said Wednesday. "He has seeped into every area of our culture" ? music, fashion, performance and design.

"In the last couple of years, the fashion references have been non-stop," Broackes said. "Jonathan Saunders, Miu Miu, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Gucci ? all reference him. It seems that the creative directors of those companies often are of a certain age, and perhaps they first came across David Bowie in the '70s and have reached these positions of authority now."

Bowie is arguably music's greatest chameleon, a performer who has adopted and discarded personas with abandon as he moved through musical styles from folk-rock to glam to soul to electronica.

As a teenager, he transformed himself from plain old David Jones ? born in 1947 and raised in the drab south London suburbs ? to exotic David Bowie. Then he went on to create a series of larger-than-life stage characters ? astronaut Major Tom, alien rock star Ziggy Stardust, troubled Aladdin Sane, the enigmatic Thin White Duke.

It's that eclecticism, the show argues, that makes Bowie uniquely influential ? he has mixed up sounds and styles, genres and genders, to come up with something all his own.

The show includes glimpses at Bowie's wide range of influences, from British musical theater to Berlin cabaret; from German Expressionism to Japanese Kabuki; from surrealism to Andy Warhol.

Bowie gave curators access to his personal archive, although he was not directly involved in planning the show. The 300 items on display include film clips, photographs, handwritten lyrics, storyboards for videos and drawings of costumes and sets.

There is plenty to thrill Bowie fans, from his first single ("Liza Jane," by Davie Jones and the King Bees, released in 1964) to film footage of the only meeting between Bowie and Andy Warhol ? an awkward 1971 encounter ? to a painting by Bowie of Iggy Pop in a wintry 1970s Berlin.

In contrast to the hushed halls throughout the rest of the museum, there is plenty of sound and vision, including performance footage from Bowie's large-scale tours and inventive videos for songs like "Ashes to Ashes."

Above all, there are extravagant costumes, including the multicolored quilted jumpsuit from that pivotal "Starman" appearance, designed by Freddie Burretti. Bowie wore it with red patent leather boots, calling the look "ultraviolence in Liberty fabrics."

Fashion always played a major part in creating the Bowie mystique, and he chose designers carefully, from the late Alexander McQueen ? whose Union Jack coat adorned Bowie's "Earthling" album cover ? to Kansai Yamamoto, a key 1970s collaborator.

The show includes several flamboyant Yamamoto outfits, including a knitted cat suit that Bowie wore as Aladdin Sane. The exhibition reveals, endearingly, that a knitting pattern was published so fans could make their own versions.

The David Bowie who emerges through the exhibition is a canny businessman and hard-working innovator as well as eclectic artist.

Bowie has released 27 studio albums, and performed 1,000 gigs in 12 tours between 1972 and 2004. Along the way, he sold shares in himself with the issue of "Bowie Bonds" and set up the website and online community Bowienet.

And then he stopped, seemingly retiring for good in 2004 after suffering a heart attack.

Exhibition co-curator Geoffrey Marsh argues that retiring from public view was yet another example of Bowie's genius.

"He's been famous for 10 years by doing nothing," Marsh said.

Then, earlier this year, Bowie startled the world by announcing he was releasing a new album. "The Next Day," with its melancholy backward glances at Bowie's time in divided Berlin in the 1970s, has received largely positive reviews. Fans are even starting to dream there could be some new live shows.

And there is little sign of Bowie's influence waning.

"When we started this exhibition, we thought we were reaching 'peak Bowie,'" Broackes said. "But we're opening in a week when he has an album that is No. 1 in 40 countries."

"David Bowie Is" runs at London's Victoria and Albert Museum until Aug. 11, and at the Museum of Image and Sound in Sao Paulo, Brazil, from January to April 2014.

Indianapolis campus searched after gunman reported

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Police were searching a university campus in Indianapolis on Tuesday after a student reported seeing a man carrying a rifle or shotgun near its medical school.

The search began at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis after a student told police she was walking to her car around 12:30 p.m. when she saw a man wearing a long brown coat and carrying a long gun, IUPUI police Capt. Bill Abston said. Investigators said the woman lost sight of him, so they didn't know whether he left on foot or in a car. Police later received two additional reports of sightings.

The downtown campus, which has about 30,000 students, issued an alert for students and staff to seek shelter, and buildings were being searched by campus police and Indianapolis Metro police. Two hospitals affiliated with the medical school, University Hospital and Riley Hospital for Children, were locked down, as were a nearby high school and the NCAA headquarters.

"It's very challenging when we get something like this. There are a lot of main streets in and out and a lot of people," Abston said.

Abston said officers would keep searching until they had checked all the buildings and parking lots.

Kamakshi Sishtla, a lab technician at the Indiana University School of Medicine, said she initially hid in a small, windowless equipment room in the building where she works, which is across the street from where the man first was spotted. "I thought, 'Better to be safe than sorry," Sishtla said.

Cory Olson, a 43-year-old nursing student, said he was in the nursing building when police came in and evacuated the building.

"The police officers sent everybody out. Someone said, 'Where do we go?' and he said, 'Anywhere but here.'"

About an hour into the search, some students were wandering around outside campus buildings and watching police cars lined up in the distance. Dan Engling, a 23-year-old public health student, said he and other students weren't overly concerned.

"It's kind of breaking up the monotony, people think it's interesting," he said.

Thief returns $800 from 1980s Michigan burglary

HASTINGS, Mich. (AP) ? A burglar expressing guilt about stealing $800 from a western Michigan store three decades ago has repaid the money, plus some interest.

The anonymous thief sent a note and $1,200 in $100 bills to the Barry County sheriff's department in Hastings, and they arrived Monday, WOOD-TV reported (http://bit.ly/WzFNjS ).

The writer admitted breaking into the Middle Mart on Michigan 37 in Thornapple Township north of Middleville about 30 years ago.

In a letter packed with emotion and spelling errors, the writer asks for "help in locating a man" to whom the writer owes the money.

"Anyways, I did a very bad thing that I am shamed of and have lived with this guilt," the writer said. "I can't begin to say how sorry iam but have lived with this guilt too long," the letter went on to say. "If you do find him, please tell him that I was afoolish stupid man when I did that and iam sorrie."

The letter was unsigned and had no return address.

The $1,200, while it includes some interest, falls short of making up for the loss in the dollar's purchasing power over the intervening years. The stolen $800 would be worth about $1,800 today, based on changes in the consumer price index.

WOOD-TV said the former owner of the store, now called Greg's Get-N-Go, confirmed it was broken into in the 1980s. The store was sold in 1988.

Undersheriff Bob Baker said the letter and cash came as quite a surprise.

"This doesn't happen every day," Baker said. He said the department isn't interested in reopening the case because of the time that has passed.

How Apple reduces duplicative efforts and complexity

How Apple reduces duplicative efforts and complexity

Don Melton, who ran WebKit and Safari for Apple until last year, has been sharing his insights for a while now on his personal blog. His latest post delves into the canard of fake projects and loyalty tests, but in dispelling it, Melton also sheds light on why Apple's corporate culture makes such things outlandish to begin with. From donmelton.com:

Clearly, duplication of effort is not big in Cupertino. Even with two operating systems ? iOS and OS X ? the idea is to share technologies that make sense and keep those technologies from diverging too much. Otherwise it becomes really complicated to coordinate releases. It?s not perfect, but anyone who?s attended an Apple developer conference knows the company takes reducing even that kind of duplication seriously.

In stark contrast to competitors who sometimes have 3 versions of the same service, or multiple layers of middle management, or committees of engineers, Apple runs not like the enormous mega-corporation it is, but an almost cell-like structure of small, lean, stay-hungry startups.

There's no better way to keep secrets than not to provide people with information they don't need in the first place, and no better way to keep loyalty than to empower people with meaningful work.

Logic, understanding, and experience cuts through a lot of noise. Check out the rest of Melton's post for more.

EPA threatens to sue fuel-storage facility in San Pedro

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has notified the owners of a 40-year-old San Pedro tank farm, which has up to 25 million gallons of highly flammable butane, that it is prepared to sue to ensure compliance with federal law.

The formal notification of potential federal enforcement against the San Pedro Terminal, owned by Plains LPG Services and operated by Rancho LPG Holdings, was based on investigations of the facility, EPA officials said Saturday. The terminal, perched on a hill, is one of the largest and oldest aboveground fuel-storage facilities of its kind in the country.

"We are not aware of any previous state or federal enforcement action against the facility," said Dan Meer, assistant director of the superfund division in EPA Region 9.

The owner of the storage facility was not immediately available for comment.

One of the EPA's chief concerns is that the facility allegedly has not addressed the consequences of a loss of city water for fire suppression in the event of an earthquake, Meer said.

The EPA said the omission is in violation of a federal law requiring owners and operators to design and maintain a safe facility by taking steps necessary to prevent releases and minimize the consequences of accidental releases of hazardous substances.

Neighbors and public officials have complained for decades that the collection of domed, 80-foot-tall tanks had the makings of a potential catastrophe.

"We are delighted with the EPA's action," said Janet Schaaf-Gunter of San Pedro and Peninsula Homeowners United. "That facility is far more dangerous today than it ever was because it sits on a 40-year-old infrastructure."

In 2011, Rancho LPG Holdings said its tanks were well-maintained and equipped with an array of safety measures, including monitors, sprinkler systems, automatic shut-off valves and dikes to contain a gas spill.

They also noted that homes, built before the tanks, are located about 1,000 feet from the site.

Failure to comply with federal regulations could result in enforcement actions, including civil and administrative penalties of up to $37,500 per day of noncompliance, according to the notice sent to the facility Thursday.

Show Review: Django Django ? ColumbusUnderground.com

Django Django, both D?s are silent.

Last night, Django Django played a sold out show at The Newport. Lead singer, guitar player, and dance commander, Vincent Neff announced, ?We?re Django Django from Britain? before breaking into their fourth dance-worthy song.

I have to admit, I was skeptical of Django Django because of rave reviews from the pages of the UK based magazine, NME. They post regularly on the ?genius? of Oasis, in which I am in disagreement. NME and I see eye to eye on their choice of Django Django?s self-titled album as one of the top albums of 2012. In a sea of people, I noticed people dancing and a general excitement to see a newer, rising band playing for the first time at The Newport.

Django Django has some slight industrial elements and seems to pay homage to the 80?s that isn?t annoying or overpowering. A friend standing close by mentioned that they sound a bit Muse-y. Bass player, Jimmy Dixon, played with a soldier-like quiet confidence, in which I especially enjoyed during an unexpected break down of their hit ?Default?. Each time David Maclean came in contact with any part of his drum set, I knew he was ensuring that I?d have a headache, but without the regret in the morning unlike that one night stand from a week ago. Synthesizer/keyboard/biggest-tambourine-I?d-ever-seen player, Tommy Grace, danced to every song while providing music to also make the audience dance. I even got that one-legged Midwestern pulse thing my limbs usually reserve for friends? bands.

The highlight of the show came during ?Default?. The band played a more upbeat version while the crowd went wild with excitement for the CD102.5 hit. The break down included an old-fashioned introduction of each band member, provided by Neff. Although ?Default? is one of my favorite jams on the album, ?Firewater? took over that spot after seeing it performed live.

This one is a must see. Django Django will perform tomorrow in Chicago at the Metro, and seeing them would be the perfect way to start off the weekend. Their tour continues to Minnesota before heading to the west coast. Declaring their love for Columbus, I foresee another show, but perhaps only after they release their second album.

Did Venezuela's Chavez nudge Christ to pick South American pope?

By Ana Isabel Martinez

CARACAS (Reuters) - Late Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez's influence may have stretched into the afterlife and had a hand in Christ's decision to opt for a Latin American Pope, acting President Nicolas Maduro said on Wednesday.

"We know that our commander ascended to the heights and is face-to-face with Christ," Maduro said at a Caracas book fair. "Something influenced the choice of a South American pope, someone new arrived at Christ's side and said to him: 'Well, it seems to us South America's time has come.'"

Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina was elected in a surprise choice to be the new leader of the Roman Catholic Church on Wednesday, the first non-European pope in nearly 1,300 years.

"He (Chavez) may also call a constitutional assembly in Heaven at any moment to change the (Catholic) church on Earth so the people, the pure people of Christ, may govern the world," Maduro added of his mentor.

Chavez, who died last week, is revered with quasi-religious fervor by many of Venezuela's poorest for spending heavily on social programs and thumbing his nose at Western capitalism.

Maduro, Chavez's handpicked successor, is hoping to benefit from the outpouring of grief among his supporters and win an April 14 presidential vote.

Though influenced by an eclectic mix of revolutionary heroes and thinkers, Chavez always professed himself to be a devout Catholic, increasingly so during his final two-year battle with cancer.

During one Mass for his health last year, Chavez wept in public and pleaded with God to extend his life.

But his tumultuous rule included constant spats with Catholic leaders whom he accused of siding with Venezuela's traditional elite.

Not to be outdone by Maduro ahead of the looming April election, Venezuelan opposition candidate Henrique Capriles sent a congratulatory letter to the new pontiff.

"I ask you to bless Venezuela and Venezuelans, bless families and he who writes to you," wrote Capriles, also a devout Catholic who often visits a shrine on Margarita Island.

FinSpy Software Used To Surveil Activists Around The World, Report Says

FinSpy surveillance software, marketed worldwide to law enforcement agencies as a way to monitor criminals, is widely used by repressive governments to spy on human rights groups and dissidents, according to a report released Wednesday.

The report by researchers at the Citizen Lab of the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto found the software is "regularly sold to countries where dissenting political activity and speech is criminalized."

FinSpy, named after a line of code in its software, is a surveillance tool that infects computers to capture screenshots, log keystrokes, record Skype conversations and activate cameras and microphones. Gamma Group, a British company, makes the software and markets it to law enforcement agencies as a lawful way to monitor criminals.

Gamma Group could not immediately be reached for comment. Last year, Martin J. Muench, a Gamma Group managing director, told The New York Times that FinSpy was used mostly ?against pedophiles, terrorists, organized crime, kidnapping and human trafficking." He declined to disclose which countries had bought the software.

But security researchers say FinSpy is used by governments around the world for broader purposes. Last year, Citizen Lab researchers found that the government in Bahrain had used FinSpy to target activists in that country.

The researchers said in their report Wednesday they found FinSpy in 25 countries, including the U.S. and several countries "with troubling human rights records."

"Our findings highlight the increasing dissonance between Gamma?s public claims that FinSpy is used exclusively to track 'bad guys' and the growing body of evidence suggesting that the tool has and continues to be used against opposition groups and human rights activists," the researchers wrote.

For example, the researchers found FinSpy on cell phones in Vietnam stealing text messages, snooping on phone calls and tracking users locations via GPS. Last year, a Vietnamese court convicted 14 bloggers, writers and activists of attempting to overthrow the government and sentenced them to up to 13 years in prison.

The researchers also found a version of FinSpy in Ethiopia that tricked users into downloading the spyware with photos of an Ethiopian political group, suggesting the government used the surveillance for political purposes, the report said.

The report comes a day after Reporters Without Borders compiled a list of what it called five "Corporate Enemies of the Internet" because those companies allegedly sell products used by authoritarian governments to conduct Internet surveillance. The five companies are Gamma, Trovicor, Hacking Team, Amesys and Blue Coat, according to the organization, which defends media freedom worldwide.

Governments around the world have used spyware designed by Hacking Team and Gamma to capture the passwords of journalists, the group said.

The report also comes a day after the top U.S. intelligence official, James R. Clapper Jr., warned Congress about the national security threats posed by companies that "develop and sell professional-quality technologies to support cyber operations -- often branding these tools as lawful-intercept or defensive security research products."

"Foreign governments already use some of these tools to target U.S. systems," Clapper told a Senate panel. He did not name specific companies.

slate tile shower cleaning - DIY Home Improvement, Remodeling ...

My wife and I just purchased our first home and we are clueless with some of the stuff that we never had in our homes growing up. One is a slate tile shower. We need to strip and reseal the shower (I think) as it has not been done in about a year. Also, due to lack of knowledge on the whole thing, our grout has gotten rusty (I think). When i get home I can try and figure out how to post some pictures but until then does anyone have any advice on how to clean this thing up? It is slate from top to bottom, no bath tub, just a two person walk in shower. Thanks!

Thrilling conclusion for Big East conference

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) ? Notre Dame and Connecticut provided a thrilling final act for the Big East.

The conference name will live on with the basketball schools that are separating from the football schools next year. But the Big East that has been arguably the best women's basketball conference in the country over the past decade will be no more.

And, no other conference could compare.

From UConn winning seven national titles, five in the past 10 years, to four different teams making the Final Four in the past six seasons ? including Notre Dame, which has been in the last two.

"It's been an unbelievable run for us," Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw said. "They elevated our program and we owe a lot to the Big East for where our program is now."

The conference set a record with nine teams making the NCAA tournament field three seasons ago.

Now the lights will dim on this women's basketball juggernaut that has dominated the national landscape. The final game turned out to be another show-stopper with Notre Dame coming away with a 61-59 victory. It was the closest championship game since another classic ? UConn's two-point win over the Irish in 2001 when Sue Bird hit a memorable shot at the buzzer to win it.

That was one of the six times that Notre Dame faced UConn in the title game and fell short. Tuesday night was the Irish's turn to come away with a victory.

"It's the best conference in the country, the most competitive, it's just been amazing," said Notre Dame's Skylar Diggins, who is the conference's two-time reigning player of the year. "You're going to be challenged by any Big East team you come up against. It's just been great for me to come into this league at Notre Dame. To be part of the last Big East game, I'm glad I finished it in this league."

Natalie Achonwa made a lay-in with 1.8 seconds left to lift the second-ranked Irish to the win over the No. 3 Huskies ? a wonderful closing chapter in a rich history of women's basketball.

"It's sad, sure," said Villanova coach Harry Perretta, who was part of the Big East when it first started in 1983. "We are the best conference in the country. Anytime there's something that's good that goes away you're sad. I don't know how you look at it any other way than to look forward. I'll always remember it fondly for what it was."

The seven schools breaking away from major college football include some of the Big East's most recognizable teams: Georgetown, St. John's, Providence, Seton Hall, Villanova, Marquette and DePaul. None of them really has been consistently at the top of the current Big East, leaving the race for a title wide open next season.

"That unto itself will make the new league very exciting," Perretta said. "The kids know. They aren't dumb. We start the season and think we can get fourth or fifth. Now the goal at the beginning of the season is, 'Wow, we could win,' so that becomes very exciting."

DePaul Athletic Director Jean Lenti Ponsetto agreed with Perretta.

"What's exciting is what we enjoy on the men's side currently in the conference: anyone can win it and move up and down pretty quickly," she said. "That's what will make this new conference great for the fans."

It still is to be determined where the new conferences will play their tournaments next year. The current deal with the Hartford XL Center was going to expire this year even before the conference broke up.

The conference has had over a million fans attend the tournament over the past decade ? the most by far in the country, so staying in Connecticut is a strong possibility for at least one of the new leagues.

Associate commissioner Danielle Donehew and the conference are hopeful that it will continue.

"We're going to search around next year and do our due diligence to find somewhere for our conference to play," she said.

Donehew said it's been an amicable divorce so far between the schools, who want each other to succeed in the future.

"What the Big East has done in women's basketball has certainly raised the level of the game," she said. "It's provided a platform for some teams to grow exponentially and the schools won't forget that."

And anyone who watched the finale Tuesday night won't forget that anytime soon. Nor will the programs that were part of it.

"It was a great partnership that produced some memorable moments in a lot of sports. We are very sorry to see the Big East that we knew and grew up in not exist anymore," Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick said before the game.

Opinion: Immigration reform must keep families together, protect ...

A core principle of immigration reform must be a focus on protecting children of undocumented immigrants, who through no fault of their own can end up being ripped away from a loving home or denied the right to see a parent they primarily rely on to have their basic needs met.

This?week marked a great leap forward as the Obama Administration began implementing a new federal immigration rule aimed at keeping ?mixed status? families together.

Under the rule, certain undocumented immigrants who are immediate relatives of a U.S. citizen can apply for a waiver from a 10-year ban for being in the United States unlawfully.

For a spouse who may be an undocumented immigrant, the rule gives them one more pathway to continue caring for their children and families who rely on their emotional and financial support.

The rule was first initiated by President Obama last year, in keeping with his pledge to take executive action on comprehensive immigration reform if Congress was unwilling to tackle this critically important issue.

Congress and the Administration must continue working together on a comprehensive immigration reform package, particularly a plan that keeps families together.? This new rule is another step in the right direction but more must be done as the debate continues around immigration reform.

Every effort should be made before families are torn apart to make sure undocumented immigrants have access to their children and are able to continue providing for their families, who oftentimes would be left in dire straits if a loved one were to be deported or detained.

When an immigration arrest occurs, law enforcement sometimes refuse to allow detained immigrant parents the opportunity to properly ensure their children will be taken care of.? This can result in unnecessary placements into the foster care system, needlessly taking children away from families who otherwise are more than capable of providing a loving home.

For undocumented immigrants who have experienced the horror of having a child ripped away from their family, they know all too well how difficult the current system can be to navigate.? For example, the hearings and proceedings that determine where a child will be placed tend to take place far from the detention centers where immigrants are held.

This makes it incredibly difficult for caseworkers to maintain contact with undocumented immigrant parents, further reducing the likelihood they will be able to properly care for their children who by now may have been placed in the foster care system.

Unable to care for their children because of their detention, undocumented immigrants face the risk of having their parental rights inappropriately terminated, resulting in permanent family separation.

For parents fortunate enough to be released, the system isn?t much more helpful in helping them to keep their families together. Several roadblocks continue to exist, such as undocumented immigrant parents being forced to meet requirements of a child-welfare case plan that is almost impossible to complete.

Parents may be asked to prove they can meet the healthcare needs of their children but programs such as Medicaid and other services are not available to these parents because of their immigration status.

The odds of these parents being unable to reunite with their children become much greater once a deportation has occurred.? Foreign consulates aren?t always able to get involved with reuniting families and some social workers and family court judges may believe that children of deported immigrants are better off living in the foster-care system here in the United States than they would be living with their parents in another country.

Implementation of new regulatory rules like the one the Obama Administration began this week, in addition to passage of legislation making it more difficult to terminate parental rights based solely on immigration status, would go a long way toward helping to keep families together while we sort out comprehensive immigration reform.

It is possible to reform our broken immigration system and keep families together at the same time. Children should be placed in the best homes for them, with loving and caring families regardless of the immigration status of their parents.

Families being raised by a spouse who, in some cases has spent years in the United States working hard to provide for their children shouldn?t have to live in fear that every day a loved one goes off to work they may not return home for fear of being detained or deported.

America can and must continue striving for a better immigration system that keeps families together.

Congresswoman Karen Bass represents California?s 37th Congressional District and is a member of the House Judiciary Committee. ?

Gaudi's Sagrada Familia inches toward completion, with help from cuttingedge aeronautical software

Barcelona's Sagrada Familia has been a labor of love. Still unfinished over 130 years since construction started, Antoni Gaudi's designs have been given a boost through advanced software more typically used in aeronautical projects. CBS' 60 Minutes took a look at the recent development of the huge church, a building where every detail of its facade attempts to detail the story of the bible. While the architect had crafted elaborate plaster models of the finished designs, these were unfortunately destroyed during the Spanish Civil War. Building continued, but slowed after the second facade was finished, as the construction workers and designers had no idea how to follow the original plans for the rest of the building. This was where architect Mark Burrey and others were brought in to reverse engineer Gaudi's models, which were now piles of shards. Using advanced design software typically used in auto and airplane design, they were able to figure our how to model the advanced shapes and surfaces that Gaudi's avant garde plans demanded and building continued. You can watch the full story of the Sagrada Familia's continued development after the break -- with no extraterrestrial interference.

Before the conclave, horse-trading has begun

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? The Vatican insists that the cardinals participating in the upcoming conclave will vote their conscience, each influenced only by silent prayers and reflection. Everybody knows, however, that power plays, vested interests and Machiavellian maneuvering are all part of the game, and that the horse-trading is already under way.

Can the fractious Italians rally behind a single candidate? Can the Americans live up to their surprise billing as a power broker? And will all 115 cardinals from around the world be able to reach a meeting of minds on whether the church needs a people-friendly pope or a hard-edged manager able to tame Vatican bureaucrats?

This time there are no star cardinals and no big favorites, making the election wide open and allowing the possibility of a compromise candidate should there be deadlock.

While deliberations have been secret, there appear to be two big camps forming that have been at loggerheads in the run-up to the conclave.

One, dominated by the powerful Vatican bureaucracy called the Curia, is believed to be seeking a pope who will let it continue calling the shots as usual. The speculation is that the Curia is pushing the candidacy of Brazilian Odilo Scherer, who has close ties to the Curia and would be expected to name an Italian insider as Secretary of State ? the Vatican No. 2 who runs day-to-day affairs at the Holy See.

Another camp, apparently spearheaded by American cardinals, is said to be pushing for a reform-minded pope with the strength to shake up the Curia, tarnished by infighting and the "Vatileaks" scandal in which retired Pope Benedict XVI's own butler leaked confidential documents to a journalist. These cardinals reportedly want Milan archbishop Angelo Scola as pope, as he is seen as having the clout to bring the Curia into line.

The other key question to resolve is whether the pope should be a "pastoral" one ? somebody with the charisma and communication skills to attract new members to a dwindling flock ? or a "managerial" one capable of a church overhaul in a time of sex-abuse scandals and bureaucratic disarray.

It's hard to find any single candidate who fits the bill on both counts.

Italy has the largest group of cardinal electors with 28, and believes it has a historic right to supply the pope, as it did for centuries. Italians feel it's time to have one of their own enthroned again after 35 years of "foreigners," with the Polish John Paul II and the German Benedict.

But Italians are divided by which Italian church groups they have been affiliated with, and which leaders they follow. A dispute that pitted the followers of the archbishops of Genoa and Florence is said to have cost them the papacy in 1978 after 455 years of Italian popes.

Andrea Riccardi, a founder of the Sant Egidio community and minister of cooperation in the Italian government, says Italian cardinals should get the first look.

"The pope is bishop of Rome," Riccardi said. "Only if the selection of an Italian becomes impractical should it be the case to look in another direction."

From one point of view, the Italians have already suffered a setback. The selection of Tuesday for the conclave to begin is considered a victory for the "foreigners" who had sought more time to get to know get to know one another amid pressures to begin voting as early as Sunday.

And the leading Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, which polled experts on Saturday, found Boston Cardinal Sean O'Malley topped their list of papal favorites ? ahead of both Scherer and Scola.

Two other Americans ? Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York and Cardinal Donald Wuerl of Washington ? also emerged as potential popes in the survey. That was a surprise since Americans had largely been written off because of potential negative perceptions of electing a superpower pope. Vatican watchers have also noted that an American pope would likely have difficulty dealing with anti-Christian violence and persecution in the Islamic world.

But there are 11 American cardinal-electors, second in number only to the Italians, and they are being talked up for their perceived managerial skills.

The American reputation may have been boosted by the Vatican's decision to silence their daily pre-conclave news conferences. The American eagerness for transparency has been well received among Catholics ? and cast in sharp contrast to the secrecy-prone Italians.

There is one more camp, which presumably commands enough votes to influence the election.

It is the "Benedict faction," the 67 voting cardinals who owe their red hat and presence in the conclave to the most recent pope. They make up more than half of the voters.

Their loyalty to Benedict could damage the ambitions of any cardinal thought to have damaged his papacy and been part of the "divisions" that Benedict lamented in his final addresses.

Who might that be? Their names are presumably listed in a secret report prepared for Benedict about the "Vatileaks" scandal.

Only a few people have seen that report. None of the cardinals who will be voting are among them.

PHOENIX (AP) ? Running out of outs, Adam Jones and the United States suddenly broke loose and saved themselves from a humbling loss.

Now, thanks to a fast finish, they're heading to Miami for the next round of the World Baseball Classic.

Jones doubled in the tying and go-ahead runs in the eighth inning, Eric Hosmer hit a three-run double in the ninth and the U.S. scored seven times in the last two innings to beat Canada 9-4 on Sunday.

"Words can't describe it," Hosmer said, recalling how he felt standing on second base after his big hit. "It is hard to hold your emotions right there. It is just an unbelievable feeling and when you hear the crowd chant 'USA' and the other crowd chanting 'Canada,' it is an unbelievable experience."

The winner of the game moved on, the loser went home. And for a long while, it didn't look good for manager Joe Torre's team.

"It would have been embarrassing," second baseman Brandon Phillips said. "I would have been embarrassed. USA, this is where baseball started and we represent our country. I just feel that if we had lost, we didn't do our job. We have to go out there and try to be the first American team to win the WBC. That is our goal."

The U.S. trailed 3-2 after seven innings before rallying. Team USA and Italy each went 2-1 and advanced in Group D while Canada and Mexico went 1-2 and were eliminated.

"We believed in ourselves and turned it around," Phillips said, "and that is a beautiful thing."

Jones and Hosmer both had a rough week at the plate but came through with the United States on the brink of defeat. Jones' hit was his second in nine at-bats. Hosmer, a late replacement on the U.S. roster for injured Matt Teixeira, was 3 for 13.

Torre said the U.S. lineup had too much talent not to finally come through.

"Those two balls that were hit, both Jones and Hosmer, were about as hard as you'll ever see," Torre said, "because I think both times the center fielder thought he had a shot at it, and he just had no chance. That ball just took off over their heads. They creamed those."

Phillips, a three-time Gold Glove winner, also contributed. He made a diving stop to prevent Canada from tying it in the eighth, then doubled and scored in the ninth.

Heath Bell pitched a scoreless seventh for the win. Jimmy Henderson took the loss.

Canada's Michael Saunders, of the Seattle Mariners, hit a two-run homer off starter Derek Holland and was chosen the Group D MVP, going 8 for 11 in the tournament with seven RBIs.

"It's an honor," Saunders said, "but it's really kind of a sour taste in my mouth right now."

Canada manager Ernie Whitt called Saunders "an up-and-coming outfielder that's going to be a superstar."

The United States won Group D, taking the tiebreaker thanks to its 6-2 victory over the Italian squad. The U.S. plays Group C runner-up Puerto Rico on Tuesday night in Miami. Italy faces the Dominican Republic, which went 3-0 to win Group C.

David Wright, whose grand slam lifted the U.S. past Italy on Saturday night, doubled and walked three times. Ben Zobrist had three hits, none of which left the infield.

Canada, coming off a 10-3 win over Mexico that featured a bruising ninth-inning brawl, finished 1-2. The Canadians have not made it out of the first round in any of the three WBCs.

They looked in great shape much of the afternoon against the United States, which was looking to avoid its worst showing ever in the tournament. The Americans made it to the second round in 2006 and the semifinals in 2009.

For the third straight game, the U.S. fell behind early.

Justin Morneau, 8 for 12 in the tournament for Canada, doubled to start the second, then Saunders hit Holland's 1-0 pitch into the bullpen down the right-field line to make it 2-0.

The U.S. tied it with two runs in the fourth, one unearned.

Joe Mauer led off with a single and Wright walked. Zobrist put down a near-perfect bunt for a base hit, with third baseman Taylor Green throwing wildly to first and allowing a run to score. Jones' sacrifice fly to center brought in the tying run.

Green, playing third for Canada because Brett Lawrie was hurt just before the WBC began, also had an error in the second when he dropped Zobrist's high pop fly in the bright sunlight.

Canada regained the lead at 3-2 in the sixth. Joey Votto drew a leadoff walk from reliever Glen Perkins and went to second on Morneau's single. Saunders struck out looking and Chris Robinson flied out, advancing the runner to third. Adam Loewen's first-pitch single brought Votto home.

Mauer opened the eighth with a single, then Wright walked. Torre made an aggressive move when, with Willie Bloomquist pinch running for Mauer, he sent both runners on Henderson's 1-2 pitch to Jones. Jones connected, bringing both runners home and the United States had the lead for good. Shane Victorino singled Jones home to make it 5-3.

Canada made it a one-run game in its half of the eighth but would have tied it had it not been for a spectacular defensive play by Phillips. His diving stop of Loewen's bases-loaded grounder allowed one run to score, but kept the U.S. in the lead.

The U.S. broke it open against Scott Mathieson and closer John Axford in the ninth.

Phillips started it with a double. Jonathan Lucroy had an RBI single, then Wright walked once again. Axford came on and allowed an infield single to Zobrist. Jones struck out, but Hosmer cleared the bases with a shot to deep center.

Torre benched Miami's dynamic young slugger Giancarlo Stanton in favor of Victorino in left field. He also moved Ryan Braun to designated hitter and put Zobrist in right. Mauer, the DH in the first two games, was the starting catcher. Stanton was hitless in the first two games, although he did have a pair of deep fly balls in the opening loss to Mexico.
